SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

💡 This Skill includes references (resource) components.

What problem does it solve?

ADRs provide a consistent, auditable format to capture architectural decisions, rationale, alternatives, and tradeoffs, reducing ambiguity and rework.

Core Features & Use Cases

Structured format: Create ADRs using a standardized template with required sections (Context, Decision, Consequences).
Rationale and traceability: Capture full rationale, tradeoffs, and alternatives for future reference.
Lifecycle and naming: Use ADR-NNN-title.md naming and store ADRs under ADRs/ with templates from references/adr-template.md.

Quick Start

Create ADR-001 for a new design decision and save it under ADRs/ using the adr-template.md from references/.

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I document software architecture decisions using a standard template?▼

Architecture Decision Records document software architecture decisions by capturing context, decision, and consequences using a standardized template, ensuring rationale and tradeoffs are consistently recorded for future reference.

What is the best way to structure an Architecture Decision Record for traceability?▼

The best way to structure an Architecture Decision Record for traceability is using a standardized template with required sections for context, decision, and consequences, capturing full rationale, alternatives, and tradeoffs in an auditable format.

How do I create and name ADR files for a software architecture project?▼

To create and name ADR files, save records under an ADRs/ directory using the naming convention ADR-NNN-title.md, populating each file from the adr-template.md stored in the references/ folder to ensure consistent formatting.

When do I need to write Architecture Decision Records in software development?▼

You need to write Architecture Decision Records when a software architecture project requires documented rationale, alternatives, and tradeoffs for design decisions, reducing ambiguity and rework across the development lifecycle.

What sections are required in a standardized architecture decision template?▼

A standardized architecture decision template requires sections for Context, Decision, and Consequences, ensuring that the rationale, alternatives, and tradeoffs of each architectural choice are fully documented.

Can I use ADRs to capture design alternatives and tradeoffs for future reference?▼

Yes, Architecture Decision Records capture full rationale, tradeoffs, and alternatives for future reference, providing a consistent and auditable format to document architectural decisions and reduce ambiguity.
