SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Large features often lack structure, making them difficult to estimate, track, and deliver. This leads to scope creep, missed deadlines, and team overwhelm, hindering project success.

Core Features & Use Cases

Epic Structuring: Automatically breaks down large features into logical epics with clear milestones and story groupings.
Dependency & Risk Management: Identifies and documents critical dependencies, risks, and assumptions for comprehensive planning.
Use Case: You're launching a new "User Authentication" system. This skill helps define the epic, break it into milestones (e.g., MVP, Feature Complete), outline initial stories, and identify key risks, providing a clear roadmap.

Quick Start

Use the agileflow-epic-planner skill to plan a new "Subscription Management" feature, breaking it into milestones and initial stories.

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I break down a large feature into epics and milestones?▼

Epic planning translates vague features into well-scoped epics with defined milestones (MVP, Phase 2, Polish) and story groupings. The skill asks clarifying questions, estimates effort, identifies dependencies and risks, then generates epic documents and skeleton stories for multi-sprint or multi-month roadmaps.

What's the best way to handle scope creep and ambiguity in feature planning?▼

Structured epic planning reduces scope creep by clarifying feature boundaries upfront through dependency and risk documentation. Defining milestones and initial stories creates a functional workflow that prevents team overwhelm and missed deadlines on complex initiatives.

Can I use epic planning for features spanning multiple sprints?▼

Yes. Epic planning handles multi-sprint and multi-month roadmaps by breaking large features into logical epics with clear milestones, story groupings, and prioritization. It works for initiatives with scope ambiguity and complex dependency chains.

How do I identify risks and dependencies when planning a major feature?▼

Epic planning automatically documents critical dependencies, risks, and assumptions during the breakdown process. This comprehensive approach surfaces potential blockers and assumptions before development begins, enabling better roadmap planning.

What output does epic planning generate for my team?▼

The skill generates epic documents and skeleton stories saved to docs/05-epics/, along with defined milestones, effort estimates, and prioritized story groupings. This provides a clear, trackable roadmap your team can execute against.

Do I need technical expertise to use epic planning for feature breakdown?▼

No. Epic planning is designed for product and management workflows. It asks clarifying questions and handles the structuring logic, making it accessible for users who need to translate vague feature descriptions into executable plans without deep technical setup required.
