SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Plans comprehensive backup and disaster recovery for IT systems.

Core Features & Use Cases

3-2-1 Rule: guidance and best practices to ensure data copies, media diversity, and offsite storage.
Automation & Runbooks: automated backup scripting, restore testing procedures, and business continuity planning.
Multi-Region Readiness: supports cross-region replication and rapid recovery across environments.

Quick Start

Draft a complete backup and DR plan for our critical database across two regions, including 3-2-1 rule, RTO/RPO targets, cross-region replication, and a restore testing procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions about backup-disaster-recovery

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I plan a disaster recovery strategy for multi-region IT systems?▼

Plan disaster recovery by defining RTO and RPO targets, configuring cross-region replication, and establishing automated restore testing procedures. This ensures rapid recovery across environments while maintaining business continuity.

What is the 3-2-1 backup rule and how do I apply it to my infrastructure?▼

The 3-2-1 backup rule requires maintaining three data copies across two different media types with one copy stored offsite. Apply it by automating backup scripting and enforcing cross-region replication for offsite storage diversity.

How do I automate backup scripting and restore testing procedures?▼

Automate backup scripting by orchestrating scheduled data copies and running automated restore testing procedures. This validates recovery readiness and ensures your runbook documentation accurately reflects the restoration workflow.

Can I use this approach for business continuity planning across two regions?▼

Yes, business continuity planning across two regions is supported by configuring cross-region replication and defining specific RTO and RPO targets. This multi-region readiness ensures rapid recovery and minimal data loss during failures.

What is the best way to define RPO and RTO targets for critical databases?▼

Define RPO and RTO targets by assessing critical database recovery requirements and acceptable data loss thresholds. Establish these metrics before automating backup scripts and cross-region replication to align infrastructure with business needs.

Why does my disaster recovery plan need runbook documentation and restore testing?▼

Disaster recovery requires runbook documentation and restore testing to validate that automated backups function correctly. Without regular restore testing, cross-region replication and 3-2-1 backup configurations remain unverified and may fail during actual recovery.
