SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

💡 This Skill includes scripts (resource) components.

What problem does it solve?

This Skill helps to avoid errors caused by assuming variable coding is consistent across waves or survey bridges in the BHPS and Understanding Society datasets.

Core Features & Use Cases

Variable Coding Lookup: Identifies coding differences between BHPS and Understanding Society waves.
Harmonisation Code Generation: Provides the correct harmonisation code for consistent analysis.
Use Case: Before conducting an analysis that assumes a variable is coded consistently, use this Skill to verify the coding and generate the correct harmonisation code.

Quick Start

Use the /bhps-wave-crosswalk command followed by the variable concept you want to verify, e.g., /bhps-wave-crosswalk health.

Frequently Asked Questions about bhps-wave-crosswalk

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I harmonise variable coding differences between BHPS and Understanding Society waves?▼

To harmonise variable coding differences between BHPS and Understanding Society waves, you can use this Skill to identify specific coding discrepancies and generate the correct harmonisation codes required for consistent cross-wave analysis.

Why does my cross-wave analysis show errors when combining BHPS and Understanding Society data?▼

Cross-wave analysis errors often occur because variable coding is not consistent across BHPS and Understanding Society survey bridges. This Skill identifies those coding differences and provides the correct harmonisation code to fix the inconsistency.

What is the best way to check variable coding consistency before analyzing UK Household Longitudinal Survey data?▼

The best way to check variable coding consistency is to verify the coding across BHPS and Understanding Society waves before analysis. This Skill looks up the variable concept and generates the correct harmonisation code to ensure data alignment.

Can I use Python scripts to compare variable coding across BHPS and USoc waves?▼

Yes, this Skill requires Python scripts for data processing and comparison. It uses them to identify coding differences between BHPS and Understanding Society waves and to generate the appropriate harmonisation codes for your dataset.

Do I need to manually map variables when bridging BHPS and Understanding Society datasets?▼

You do not need to manually map variables when bridging BHPS and Understanding Society datasets. This Skill automates the lookup of variable coding differences and generates the correct harmonisation code for a direct comparison.

When should I run a harmonisation check on my BHPS and Understanding Society survey data?▼

You should run a harmonisation check before conducting any analysis that assumes a variable is coded consistently across BHPS and Understanding Society waves. This prevents errors caused by survey bridge coding discrepancies.
