SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

💡 This Skill includes references (resource) components.

What problem does it solve?

This Skill ensures that all MSBuild-based commands automatically generate detailed binary logs, preventing data loss and simplifying failure analysis.

Core Features & Use Cases

Mandatory Binlog Generation: Automatically appends /bl:N.binlog to dotnet build, dotnet test, dotnet pack, msbuild, and other MSBuild commands.
Unique Naming: Uses an incrementing counter for binlog filenames (e.g., 1.binlog, 2.binlog) to prevent overwrites and preserve build history.
Use Case: When a build fails unexpectedly, you can immediately analyze the corresponding N.binlog file to pinpoint the exact cause without needing to re-run the build.

Quick Start

Run your dotnet build command with the /bl switch, ensuring the filename is the next available number in sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions about binlog-generation

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I automatically generate MSBuild binlogs for dotnet build and test commands?▼

To ensure MSBuild binlogs are generated for dotnet build and test commands, append the /bl:N.binlog switch to your commands. This automatically creates detailed binary logs for every execution, preventing data loss and simplifying build failure analysis.

What is an MSBuild binlog and when do I need it for troubleshooting dotnet builds?▼

An MSBuild binlog is a detailed binary log file recording all build execution data. You need it for troubleshooting dotnet builds when a build fails unexpectedly, allowing you to pinpoint the exact cause by analyzing the log without re-running the build.

How do I prevent overwriting previous MSBuild binlogs when running multiple dotnet builds?▼

To prevent overwriting previous MSBuild binlogs during multiple dotnet builds, use an incrementing counter for filenames like 1.binlog and 2.binlog. You must check for existing *.binlog files to determine the next sequential number and preserve build history.

Does the binlog generation approach work with dotnet pack and publish commands?▼

Yes, the binlog generation approach works with dotnet pack and publish commands. It enforces mandatory binary log generation for all MSBuild-based commands, ensuring that pack, publish, test, and build operations consistently produce valuable diagnostic logs.

What's the best way to ensure every dotnet build generates a binlog without manual intervention?▼

The best way to ensure every dotnet build generates a binlog without manual intervention is to enforce the mandatory appending of the /bl:N.binlog switch. This automatically captures detailed MSBuild execution data for all commands, guaranteeing logs are always available for failure analysis.
