SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

This Skill helps fleet safety professionals prevent cargo securement violations by explaining federal requirements for properly restraining transported loads and avoiding roadside inspection failures.

Core Features & Use Cases

Securement Calculations: Explains working load limit calculations, tiedown counts, and aggregate WLL requirements under 49 CFR 393 Subpart I.
Commodity Rules: Covers specialized securement requirements for lumber, coils, containers, vehicles, machinery, boulders, and other regulated cargo types.
Compliance Guidance: Provides inspection practices, common violation prevention strategies, and CVSA out-of-service awareness for motor carriers.

Quick Start

Ask the cargo-securement skill to calculate whether a 40,000 lb load with four 5,000 lb chains meets federal securement requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions about cargo-securement

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I calculate aggregate working load limit for cargo securement under 49 CFR 393?▼

Cargo securement requires aggregate working load limit (WLL) to equal at least half the cargo weight. Under 49 CFR 393 Subpart I, you sum the WLL of all tiedowns to determine if your securement configuration meets federal DOT compliance standards.

How many tiedowns do I need for a 40,000 lb load to pass a roadside inspection?▼

Tiedown requirements depend on cargo weight, length, and type. For a 40,000 lb load, your aggregate working load limit across all tiedowns must equal at least 20,000 lbs to satisfy DOT compliance and avoid CVSA out-of-service violations during roadside inspections.

What are the specialized cargo securement rules for transporting steel coils and lumber?▼

Specialized commodity rules under 49 CFR 393 Subpart I dictate specific tiedown configurations, blocking, and bracing for steel coils, lumber, and machinery. These commodity-specific securement requirements ensure freight does not shift during transport to maintain DOT compliance.

Does FMCSA require specific tiedown angles for cargo securement?▼

Yes, FMCSA regulations address tiedown angles in cargo securement calculations. The working load limit is affected by the angle of the tiedown relative to the cargo, making proper angle assessment critical for accurate aggregate WLL calculation and DOT compliance.

What are common cargo securement violations that trigger CVSA out-of-service conditions?▼

Common cargo securement violations include insufficient aggregate working load limit, damaged or improper tiedowns, and failure to meet commodity-specific rules. These violations trigger CVSA out-of-service conditions during roadside inspections, preventing further transport until corrected.

When do I need commodity-specific cargo securement rules instead of general tiedown requirements?▼

You need commodity-specific cargo securement rules when transporting regulated freight like coils, lumber, vehicles, machinery, or boulders. These specialized requirements under 49 CFR 393 Subpart I override general tiedown calculations to address unique shifting risks for specific cargo types.
