What problem does it solve?
Psychological constraints prevent users from making the wrong choices by using perception, expectation, and learned conventions to make bad actions feel obviously wrong.
Core Features & Use Cases
- Symbols: Use familiar icons, labels, and visual signals (e.g., trash/X for delete/close) to communicate meaning instantly.
- Conventions: Apply established interaction rules (e.g., Cmd/Ctrl-S to save, Cmd/Ctrl-Z to undo) so behavior matches user expectations.
- Mappings: Design layout and direction so controls match their effects (e.g., slider direction and spatial placement), improving predictability.
- Use case: When designing an admin UI with destructive operations, apply conventional iconography, color/status signaling, and consistent control-to-effect mapping so users don’t accidentally trigger harmful actions.
Quick Start
Apply the constraint-psychological sub-aspect to an interaction by mapping each icon, shortcut, and control layout to the expected symbol/convention/effect relationship in your design.
