SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

This tool provides a structured framework to analyze how legal outcomes would change under alternate factual scenarios, enabling precise causation and liability assessment.

Core Features & Use Cases

Define target and outcome variables for counterfactual analysis across tort, contract, criminal, and administrative contexts.
Build counterfactual worlds by altering key variables while holding background conditions constant, then trace the resulting effects through the causal chain.
Quantify liability implications, including probabilistic outcomes and proportional responsibility, when multiple factors interact.

Quick Start

Define the target variable to alter, fix background conditions, and trace the counterfactual reasoning to determine the resulting legal outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions about counterfactual-reasoning

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I analyze legal causation using counterfactual scenarios in tort or contract cases?▼

Analyze legal causation by defining a target variable to alter, fixing background conditions, and tracing the counterfactual world to determine the resulting legal outcome and liability implications.

What is counterfactual reasoning in legal liability assessment?▼

Counterfactual reasoning frames a case's fact pattern as a hypothetical to determine whether the legal outcome changes if a key variable, duty, or circumstance were different, enabling precise liability assessment.

Can I use counterfactual worlds to quantify proportional responsibility in complex cases?▼

Yes, you can construct counterfactual worlds by altering key variables while holding background conditions constant to quantify probabilistic outcomes and proportional responsibility in complex legal cases.

How do I systematically assess damages when multiple causal factors interact in a legal dispute?▼

Assess damages by systematically defining target and outcome variables, building a counterfactual world, and tracing the causal chain to quantify probabilistic or proportional liability when multiple factors interact.

Does counterfactual analysis work for criminal and administrative law scenarios, not just torts?▼

Yes, counterfactual analysis applies to tort, contract, criminal, and administrative law scenarios where causation, liability shares, and damages depend on hypothetical changes to facts or duties.

What are the limitations of using counterfactual reasoning for complex legal argument construction?▼

Counterfactual reasoning requires accurately fixing background conditions and defining target variables; limitations arise when causal chains are too ambiguous to trace precise probabilistic or proportional liability outcomes.
