SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Data Policies and Dictionary rules guard data integrity in ServiceNow by defining when fields are mandatory, read-only, or constrained, and by controlling table schemas via dictionary definitions and overrides.

Core Features & Use Cases

Manage dictionary definitions (sys_dictionary) and dictionary overrides (sys_dictionary_override) to shape table schemas.
Create and apply Data Policies (sys_data_policy2) and policy rules (sys_data_policy_rule) to enforce field behavior across forms and records.
Includes ES5 scripting examples for creating tables, fields, choices, overrides, and complex policy logic to illustrate real-world scenarios.

Quick Start

Configure a sample incident table by creating dictionary entries, data policies, and policy rules using the included ES5 examples.

FAQPage Schema

How do I enforce mandatory or read-only fields in ServiceNow using data policies?▼

ServiceNow data policies enforce field behavior by defining rules in sys_data_policy2 and sys_data_policy_rule, making fields mandatory, read-only, or constrained across forms and records to ensure data integrity.

Can I override dictionary definitions for specific tables like incident or change_request?▼

Yes, you can use sys_dictionary_override to control table schemas, allowing you to shape dictionary definitions and override default field behaviors for specific tables like incident and change_request.

What is the difference between dictionary rules and data policies in ServiceNow?▼

Dictionary rules control table schemas and field definitions via sys_dictionary, while data policies in sys_data_policy2 enforce when fields become mandatory, read-only, or constrained during record transactions.

How do I script ServiceNow data policies and dictionary entries using ES5?▼

You can script ServiceNow data policies and dictionary entries using included ES5 examples to create tables, fields, choices, overrides, and complex policy logic across common tables for real-world scenarios.

Does this approach work for managing table schemas and data integrity across multiple ServiceNow tables?▼

Yes, this approach manages table schemas via sys_dictionary and enforces data integrity across multiple ServiceNow tables like incident and change_request using data policies and dictionary overrides.

Why are my ServiceNow dictionary overrides not applying to inherited fields correctly?▼

Dictionary overrides may not apply correctly if the sys_dictionary_override configuration does not properly target the inherited field definitions or if data policy rules conflict with the intended field behavior.
