What problem does it solve?
The Expectation Effect helps you prevent a perception–reality gap by designing how users’ prior expectations are set, updated, and ultimately calibrated against what the product delivers.
Core Features & Use Cases
- Expectation-setting priming: Calibrate what users expect before they interact using branding, pricing, category conventions, recommendations, and onboarding framing.
- In-session expectation cues: Set and maintain “surface” and “performance” expectations through typography quality, visual polish, copy tone, micro-interactions, and first-response feedback.
- Honest expectation alignment: Avoid overselling that creates disappointment, and avoid under-framing that causes users to miss real strengths; apply the principle to premium framing, plain-but-powerful products, and onboarding/first-impression moments.
Use Case: When redesigning onboarding for a new feature, use priming to set realistic expectations from the first screens and then use in-session cues to ensure the first interaction confirms the promise.
Quick Start
Ask: “Using the Expectation Effect, identify the expectations users arrive with, map the first 5 seconds and first interaction to what they promise, and recommend the smallest set of framing and cue changes to align expectations with actual product performance.”
