SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

This skill enables rapid structural understanding of large or unfamiliar codebases by coordinating sub-agents to explore regions and assemble a compact mental map without loading the entire repository into context.

Core Features & Use Cases

Structural exploration: dispatches focused agents to read modules, summarize interfaces, and identify key entry points.
Region-based mapping: builds a scalable map of dependencies and module relationships to highlight hotspots and invariants.
Synthesis & onboarding: produces a consolidated map for quick onboarding, code reviews, and refactor planning.

Quick Start

Trigger this skill to build a mental map of a codebase by dispatching sub-agents to summarize regions and assemble a structural map.

Frequently Asked Questions about explore-codebase

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I build a mental map of a large codebase without loading everything into memory?▼

To build a mental map of a large codebase without loading everything into memory, this skill orchestrates targeted sub-agents to summarize specific regions. It creates a navigable structural map by decomposing files and synthesizing summaries without overwhelming your context window.

What is the best way to explore an unfamiliar codebase for onboarding?▼

The best way to explore an unfamiliar codebase for onboarding is to dispatch focused agents to read modules and identify key entry points. This approach produces a consolidated structural map that highlights dependencies, module relationships, and invariants for rapid understanding.

Can I map codebase dependencies to plan a large refactor?▼

Yes, you can map codebase dependencies to plan a large refactor. By building a scalable map of module relationships, the approach highlights architectural hotspots and invariants, providing the regional clarity needed to safely execute structural changes.

How does structural codebase exploration with sub-agents work?▼

Structural codebase exploration with sub-agents works by dispatching focused agents to read specific modules and summarize their interfaces. A synthesis step then assembles these per-file summaries into a persistent map stored in shared state, constrained by a recursion cap.

Does exploring a sprawling codebase require loading all files into context?▼

No, exploring a sprawling codebase does not require loading all files into context. The skill applies per-file decomposition and a recursion cap to summarize regions independently, ensuring you can navigate large repositories without hitting memory limits.

When should I use an automated codebase mapping tool?▼

You should use an automated codebase mapping tool when you need regional clarity for tasks like onboarding to unfamiliar repositories, navigating forks, or planning large refactors. It builds a persistent mental map to highlight dependencies and key entry points efficiently.
