SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Feature Planning Guidelines provide a structured approach to turning vague product ideas into concrete, actionable feature plans, reducing ambiguity and rework.

Core Features & Use Cases

Structured plan: Defines a four-section plan with High-Level Solution, Implementation Details, Implementation Phases, and Potential Issues & Open Questions.
Guided execution: Includes an explicit Task List and a step-by-step implementation sequence aligned to existing codebase patterns.
Cross-functional usage: Useful for product managers, UX designers, and engineers to coordinate requirements, risk assessment, and delivery milestones.
Use Case: When starting a new feature, generate a plan that can be handed to engineering to implement with clear expectations and checkpoints.

Quick Start

Create a new feature plan using this skill by drafting a markdown file under feature-plans/ describing the plan according to the four-section structure.

FAQPage Schema

How do I convert vague product ideas into actionable feature plans?▼

To convert vague ideas into actionable feature plans, define a structured plan covering high-level solution, implementation details, phased delivery, risk assessment, and a task checklist. This structured approach reduces ambiguity and rework by enforcing concrete requirements and clear checkpoints.

What should be included in a feature planning checklist for production readiness?▼

A feature planning checklist for production readiness should include high-level solution details, implementation specifics aligned to codebase patterns, phased delivery milestones, potential issues, open questions, and a step-by-step task list. This ensures engineering teams have clear expectations for implementation.

How do I structure implementation phases and risk assessment for a new product feature?▼

Structure implementation phases and risk assessment by dividing plans into four sections: high-level solution, implementation details, implementation phases, and potential issues with open questions. This coordinates requirements refinement and delivery milestones across product managers, UX designers, and engineers.

What is the best way to document requirements refinement for cross-functional product teams?▼

The best way to document requirements refinement is drafting a markdown file with a four-section structure covering high-level solution, implementation details, phases, and potential issues. This provides cross-functional teams with guided execution steps and explicit task checklists.

Can I use structured feature planning for coordinating engineering and UX design delivery milestones?▼

Yes, structured feature planning coordinates engineering and UX design delivery milestones by defining implementation phases, explicit task lists, and risk assessment checkpoints. It generates a plan handed to engineering with clear expectations aligned to existing codebase patterns.

When do I need a phased delivery plan instead of a simple feature checklist?▼

You need a phased delivery plan when starting a new feature that requires cross-functional coordination, risk assessment, and guided execution. A simple checklist lacks the high-level solution, implementation details, and open questions sections necessary to reduce ambiguity and ensure production readiness.
