What problem does it solve?

This Skill prevents vague, unhelpful commit messages so your repository history stays readable and actionable during long-term debugging and auditing.

Core Features & Use Cases

  • Blame-friendly commit subjects: Enforces an imperative, under-72-character subject line with consistent capitalization and no trailing punctuation.
  • Meaningful bodies: Guides you to write the why, constraints, approach summary, alternatives, caveats, and references while explicitly forbidding file lists, diffs, marketing language, and AI attribution.
  • Commit hygiene guardrails: Promotes atomic commits, correct revert/migration/refactor patterns, and avoidance of problematic edits to already-pushed commits.
  • Verification: Includes a verifier script that checks recent commits for stub subjects, formatting violations, and AI attribution.

Quick Start

Use forge-commit-messages when authoring a new git commit message, ensuring the subject is an imperative line under 72 characters and the body (when needed) explains the motivation and approach without file lists or AI attribution.
