SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

💡 This Skill includes references (resource) components.

What problem does it solve?

This Skill codifies best practices for building efficient, scalable, and maintainable GraphQL APIs, addressing common challenges like N+1 query problems and complex data fetching.

Core Features & Use Cases

Schema Design: Implement schema-first design using GraphQL SDL.
Resolver Optimization: Utilize Dataloader to prevent N+1 query issues.
Advanced Features: Implement cursor-based pagination, typed error handling with unions, and type-safe client code generation.
Use Case: Integrate a GraphQL API for complex data retrieval needs within a Node.js application, ensuring performance and type safety.

Quick Start

Apply the GraphQL Patterns skill to implement a schema-first GraphQL API using Strawberry in Python, ensuring all database access is batched with Dataloader.

Frequently Asked Questions about GraphQL Patterns

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I prevent N+1 queries in a GraphQL Node.js API?▼

Prevent N+1 queries in a GraphQL API by implementing the Dataloader pattern to batch and cache database requests within a single resolver execution cycle, optimizing data fetching performance.

What is schema-first design in GraphQL and why use it?▼

Schema-first design in GraphQL defines the API contract using SDL before writing resolver code, ensuring strict type safety and enabling generated client code for Node.js applications.

How do I implement cursor-based pagination in a GraphQL schema?▼

Implement cursor-based pagination in a GraphQL schema by defining specific connection types and edge nodes, allowing efficient data retrieval without offset overhead in Node.js applications.

How does GraphQL handle error typing with union types?▼

GraphQL handles error typing with union types by returning potential error objects as part of the schema contract, allowing clients to safely resolve distinct failure states without runtime parsing.

Can I generate type-safe client code from a GraphQL schema?▼

Yes, you can generate type-safe client code from a GraphQL schema by using the schema-first SDL definitions to automatically produce TypeScript or Node.js client integration files.

Does this GraphQL pattern work with Python and Strawberry?▼

Yes, the GraphQL pattern applies to Python using the Strawberry library to build a schema-first API, ensuring database access is batched with Dataloader for optimized performance.
