What problem does it solve?
This Skill helps you turn scanned historical maps and sparse historical records into georeferenced rasters and analyzable spatial datasets. It solves the challenge of aligning historical territorial information to modern coordinates so you can compare, quantify, and visualize change across time.
Core Features & Use Cases
- GDAL GCP georeferencing: Apply Ground Control Points (GCPs) and polynomial warping to produce GeoTIFFs ready for GIS.
- Temporal territory overlays: Digitize boundaries into polygon geometries and overlay multiple periods in a single map.
- Boundary change measurement: Compute Hausdorff distance between historical boundaries to quantify how far territories shift.
- Historical population interpolation: Interpolate census point populations into a raster density surface for a given historical region.
- Territory change animation: Generate an animated visualization across multiple time steps for research or publication.
Quick Start
Georeference an 18th-century town plan by providing your scan path, a set of GCPs with pixel-to-lat/lon matches, and then writing the output GeoTIFF for GIS analysis.
