SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

This Skill helps you avoid duplicating component logic by encapsulating shared state and side-effect behavior into reusable custom React Hooks.

Core Features & Use Cases

State reuse with custom hooks: Extract shared useState logic (e.g., input state, toggles, derived flags) for multiple components.
Side-effect reuse with effect hooks: Centralize shared useEffect behavior such as subscriptions, event listeners, and lifecycle-like cleanup.
Maintain correct Hook usage: Follow the Rules of Hooks by only calling hooks at the top level and using the use naming convention for custom hooks.
Use case: When multiple components need to respond to the same key presses (or similar event-driven state), a shared useKeyPress-style hook prevents repeated wiring and reduces wrapper complexity.

Quick Start

Create a custom hook that starts with use and returns the state you need, then call it from your functional components to share the behavior safely.

Frequently Asked Questions about hooks-pattern

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I reuse stateful logic across multiple React components?▼

You can reuse React state logic by extracting shared useState and useEffect behavior into a custom hook prefixed with 'use', then calling it from functional components to share behavior safely.

How do I extract shared side effects and event listeners in React?▼

Centralize shared useEffect logic for subscriptions and event listeners into a custom hook to prevent repeated wiring and reduce wrapper complexity across multiple views.

What are the Rules of Hooks for custom hook composition?▼

The Rules of Hooks require calling hooks only at the top level and naming custom hooks with a 'use' prefix to ensure predictable composition and correct state lifecycle behavior.

How do I share keyboard press handling logic across different React views?▼

Package keyboard press state and event listeners into a shared useKeyPress-style custom hook to prevent repeated wiring and reduce wrapper complexity across React views.

Can I use custom hooks to replace higher-order components for shared state?▼

Custom hooks replace higher-order components by encapsulating shared useState logic like toggles and derived flags into a reusable API, allowing functional components to share behavior without wrapper complexity.

What limitations should I watch for when using custom hooks for component composition?▼

Limitations include strict Rules of Hooks compliance, requiring top-level invocation to avoid state bugs, and the necessity of a clear API design to ensure predictable composition across multiple views.
