What problem does it solve?

Cultural mapping resolves user confusion when controls can’t be naturally positioned or physically represented, by using shared conventions (icons, colors, gestures, metaphors) to signal what an action does.

Core Features & Use Cases

  • Conventions that carry learned meaning: Uses dominant, widely recognized signals (e.g., gear for settings, trash can for delete) to help users interpret controls quickly.
  • Four sources of meaning: Applies pictographic, indexical, metaphoric, and arbitrary mapping principles to design reliable UI signals.
  • Mitigation for misinterpretation: Recommends labeling and non-color reinforcement when conventions compete, are unfamiliar, or carry high stakes.

Quick Start

Use mapping-cultural when your UI relies on icons, status colors, gestures, or metaphors and you need to ensure the user will correctly infer the control’s purpose in your target audience.
