What problem does it solve?

This skill solves the problem of turning raw atmospheric model data into actionable thermodynamic and kinematic analysis (e.g., CAPE/CIN and skew-T/hodograph visuals) without manual downloading and hand calculations.

Core Features & Use Cases

  • THREDDS/NOMADS data retrieval: Download NWP fields or sounding profiles programmatically using Siphon (UCAR THREDDS and NOAA NOMADS endpoints).
  • Thermodynamic parcel analysis: Compute key convective indices including CAPE, CIN, LCL, LFC, and EL using MetPy with unit-aware calculations.
  • Severe-weather style visualization: Generate skew-T log-P diagrams with shaded CAPE/CIN areas and construct wind hodographs annotated with storm-relative helicity (SRH).
  • Synoptic composite mapping: Create 500 hPa maps (geopotential height contours and absolute vorticity overlays) with Cartopy basemaps.

Quick Start

Use the metpy-atmosphere skill to fetch a GFS sounding for your latitude/longitude, compute CAPE/CIN and parcel levels, and export a skew-T plus a hodograph image for the selected case.
