Clinicians often struggle to identify safe NSAID choices across species, dosing, and monitoring requirements. This skill consolidates species-specific dosing, safety considerations, and monitoring protocols to reduce GI/renal risk and therapeutic missteps.
Apply the NSAID safety workflow to select a COX-2 preferential agent for a canine patient and outline renal monitoring.

To determine safe NSAID dosing across species, clinicians apply species-specific guidelines for dogs, cats, rabbits, and horses, covering COX selectivity and contraindications. This structured workflow consolidates dosing, safety considerations, and monitoring protocols to reduce GI and renal risk.
Corticosteroid washout requirements before initiating NSAID therapy are necessary to minimize ulceration and nephrotoxicity risk. Drug interaction screening and proactive safety planning identify the specific washout intervals needed to prevent GI ulcers and renal injury.
GI and renal risk stratification involves evaluating COX-1 versus COX-2 selectivity and patient history to classify ulceration and nephrotoxicity risk. Recommended monitoring intervals and proactive safety planning are then applied to minimize these NSAID-related complications.
NSAID safety protocols differ significantly between dogs and cats due to species-specific drug metabolism, dosing guidelines, and contraindications. Clinicians must apply species-specific COX selectivity and monitoring parameters rather than using universal protocols across different animals.
Major NSAID drug interactions involve concurrent corticosteroid use and overlapping renal-toxic medications, which increase GI ulceration and nephrotoxicity risk. Interaction screening identifies these conflicts to establish safe corticosteroid washout periods and contraindication checks.
