SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Instrument software systems to provide comprehensive observability through metrics, logs, and traces, enabling faster incident analysis and better reliability.

Core Features & Use Cases

Metrics, Logs, & Traces: End-to-end observability with data programmatically collected via OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, and Datadog.
Dashboards & Alerts: Quick setup of dashboards, alerting rules, and SLO-driven monitoring for distributed systems.
Troubleshooting & Optimization: Structured instrumentation for performance tuning, anomaly detection, and incident response.

Quick Start

Instrument a new service by enabling metrics, logging, and tracing, then connect to your observability backend (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana) to start collecting data.

Frequently Asked Questions about observability-telemetry

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I instrument microservices for comprehensive observability using metrics, logs, and traces?▼

Instrument microservices for observability by programmatically collecting metrics, logs, and traces through OpenTelemetry integration. This enables end-to-end data collection for distributed systems, allowing you to establish comprehensive visibility across your architecture.

What is the best way to set up SLO-driven dashboards and alerting rules for distributed systems?▼

Set up SLO-driven dashboards and alerting rules by connecting your instrumented services to Grafana or Datadog. This provides quick configuration of monitoring visuals and automated alerts to track system reliability and anomalies.

Does this observability approach work with both Prometheus and Datadog backends?▼

Yes, this observability approach works with both Prometheus and Datadog backends, alongside Grafana and OpenTelemetry. It requires integration with these platforms to facilitate end-to-end data collection and visibility for incident analysis.

How do I enable structured instrumentation for performance tuning and incident response?▼

Enable structured instrumentation for performance tuning and incident response by activating metrics, logging, and tracing on your services. Connect to your observability backend to collect the data needed for anomaly detection and troubleshooting.

When do I need OpenTelemetry for observability in distributed systems?▼

You need OpenTelemetry for observability in distributed systems when you require a unified standard to programmatically collect metrics, logs, and traces. It provides the end-to-end data collection necessary for faster incident analysis and reliability optimization.
