Frequently Asked Questions about opam-ocaml

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I set up OCaml development with multiple compiler versions?▼

OPAM manages OCaml compiler switches, letting you create and switch between versions. Use `opam switch create` to provision a specific compiler version, then `opam switch` to activate it. This isolates dependencies and toolchains per project.

Can I automate OCaml package installation and dependency resolution?▼

OPAM automates dependency resolution and package management. Install tools like dune, merlin, and ocaml-lsp-server with `opam install`, and OPAM resolves transitive dependencies across repositories automatically.

How do I configure my OCaml environment with dune and repository sources?▼

Use `opam env` to configure shell environment variables, and `opam repo add` to register package repositories. Dune integrates with this setup to discover dependencies and build consistently across compiler versions.

What's the best way to manage OCaml toolchains across projects?▼

OPAM switches isolate compiler and tool versions per project. Create dedicated switches for each codebase to avoid version conflicts, then bind dune builds to the active switch environment via `opam env`.

Do I need OPAM to use dune and OCaml language servers?▼

OPAM is the standard package manager for OCaml tooling. It installs dune, merlin, and ocaml-lsp-server, managing their dependencies and ensuring compatibility with your compiler version.

Why would I add custom repositories to OPAM?▼

Custom repositories extend package availability beyond the default opam-repository. Use `opam repo add` to access specialized or private packages, enabling dependency resolution from multiple sources.
