Research the company's products, technical challenges, and recent publications before the meeting. Prepare tailored questions about their pain points, ask for quantitative motivation and real-world datasets, and discuss budget, funding models, and timeline expectations.

Update the paper the same day you receive feedback, or acknowledge receipt with a timeline. Use a checklist and PDF comment lists to track all feedback, and highlight revised text in LaTeX with a colored command like \revised.

Cover three areas: motivation with qualitative and quantitative details from the discussion, financial capacity including budget and funding models, and research inspiration such as new ideas or datasets. End with clear next steps, action items, and a timeline.

The minimum preferred duration is one year, with six months as the absolute minimum. A research project lifecycle needs at least six months, plus additional time for potential paper rejection and revision cycles.

Look for stable mindset and long-term commitment, avoiding candidates who switch places every few months. Conduct actual coding tests using LeetCode-style problems, evaluating problem-solving process and thinking approach rather than just correct answers.

Short visits cannot support a full research project lifecycle, so visitors should integrate into an ongoing project rather than starting a new one. The PhD student remains project lead and first author on any resulting publication.
