FAQPage Schema

How do I get FMCSA operating authority and USDOT registration for a new motor carrier?▼

To get FMCSA operating authority and USDOT registration, you must complete the federal application process, secure required insurance filings, and submit a BOC-3 process agent form. This covers all core compliance steps for new interstate carriers.

Do I need an MC number and USDOT number for interstate carrier operations?▼

Yes, interstate motor carriers generally need both a USDOT number for vehicle identification and an MC number for operating authority. Requirements depend on vehicle type, cargo, and operation scope under DOT compliance rules.

What is the difference between UCR, IRP, and IFTA carrier registration?▼

UCR, IRP, and IFTA are distinct registration programs: UCR verifies interstate operating authority, IRP apportions commercial vehicle registration across states, and IFTA reports fuel use taxes for qualifying motor carriers.

How do I manage BOC-3 process agent and insurance filings for DOT compliance?▼

Managing BOC-3 process agent and insurance filings requires designating a registered agent in each state of operation and submitting proof of required liability coverage to FMCSA. This ensures continuous operating authority compliance.

What state permit obligations apply to motor carriers beyond federal FMCSA registration?▼

Beyond federal FMCSA registration, motor carriers must fulfill state permit obligations including UCR filings, IRP vehicle registration, IFTA fuel tax agreements, and specific state-level operating permits based on routes and cargo.

When do I need operating authority versus just a USDOT number for my transportation business?▼

You need operating authority (MC number) when transporting passengers or regulated cargo for-hire across state lines, while a USDOT number is required for most commercial vehicles involved in interstate commerce regardless of authority status.
