SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve? Marketplaces and multi-seller platforms must split every payment between the platform and sellers, withhold taxes, manage rolling reserves, and file 1099-K forms — doing this manually or with pooled bank accounts creates compliance risk and operational overhead. ## Core Features & Use Cases - Stripe Connect Architecture: Guidance for choosing Express, Custom, or Standard connected accounts and implementing destination charges with application fees. - Platform-Specific Setup: Step-by-step configuration for Shopify marketplace apps, WooCommerce with Dokan, BigCommerce, and custom headless builds. - Tax & Reserve Management: Rolling reserve withholding with scheduled release, W-9 collection triggers, 24% backup withholding, and 1099-K tracking at the $600 threshold. - Use Case: A handmade goods marketplace onboarding 500 sellers uses this Skill to configure Dokan with Stripe Connect, set a 15% commission, withhold 5% reserves for 90 days, and generate year-end 1099-K reports. ## Quick Start Ask the AI to set up Stripe Connect Express accounts with split payouts and commission calculation for your marketplace platform.

FAQPage Schema

How do I split payments between sellers on a marketplace?▼

Use Stripe Connect with destination charges: create a PaymentIntent with application_fee_amount for your platform commission and transfer_data.destination set to the seller's connected account. Stripe routes the seller's share automatically at charge time.

What Stripe Connect account type should I use for sellers?▼

Express accounts are the right choice for most marketplaces — sellers onboard via a Stripe-hosted form and Stripe handles identity verification. Custom accounts give full UX control but require more implementation work.

Does WooCommerce support multi-vendor payout splitting?▼

Yes, via the Dokan Multivendor Marketplace plugin with native Stripe Connect integration. Configure commission rates under Dokan settings, and payments split automatically between the seller's connected account and your platform balance.

What is the 1099-K threshold for marketplace sellers?▼

For 2024 onward, the IRS 1099-K threshold is $600 in gross payment volume. The form must report gross order amounts before platform fees, and you should collect W-9 forms before a seller's first payout to avoid 24% backup withholding.

How do rolling reserves work for new sellers?▼

Withhold 5–10% of each seller's net earnings for 90 days to protect against refunds and chargebacks, then release automatically via a scheduled job. Track reserve amounts and release dates in your database rather than recomputing at payout time.

Why did my Stripe Connect transfer fail silently?▼

Silent transfer failures occur when webhook handling is missing. Listen for the transfer.failed event and notify sellers and your ops team immediately; also verify the connected account status is enabled before attempting transfers.
