SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

This skill orchestrates the full lifecycle for planning, approving, and building Power BI reports, turning ambiguous requests into a locked spec and enabling PBIR authoring workflows.

Core Features & Use Cases

Orchestrates the Define -> Inspect -> Spec -> Approve -> Build -> Validate -> Publish lifecycle for Power BI reports.
Enforces a structured, multi-round clarification process; integrates with the powerbi-report-design and powerbi-report-authoring skills; ensures a locked report spec before implementation.
Supports iteration across semantic-model inspection, dependency checks, design direction, and publish decisions, with clear handoff to design and authoring components.

Quick Start

Plan a new Power BI report by defining audience and scope, inspecting the model, locking the spec, and preparing for PBIR authoring.

Frequently Asked Questions about powerbi-report-planning

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I plan and approve a new Power BI report before development starts?▼

Power BI report planning requires defining the audience and scope, inspecting the semantic model, and locking a canonical report spec before authoring. This skill enforces a multi-round clarification process to turn ambiguous requests into a locked design contract for implementation.

What is the best way to define scope for a Power BI report request?▼

Defining Power BI report scope involves a structured multi-round clarification process that checks dependencies and tooling availability. This approach establishes the audience definition and locked spec needed before staged PBIR authoring and publishing can begin.

How does a Power BI report spec integrate with downstream authoring workflows?▼

A Power BI report spec integrates by producing a canonical design contract that enables staged PBIR authoring. The planning skill coordinates handoff to design and authoring components, ensuring the locked spec drives the build, validate, and publish lifecycle.

Do I need to inspect the semantic model before generating a Power BI report spec?▼

Inspecting the semantic model is required during the Power BI report planning lifecycle. The inspection step checks dependencies and tooling availability to ensure the generated report spec accurately reflects the underlying data structure before approval.

Can I use this Power BI planning workflow for PBIR authoring and publishing?▼

Yes, this workflow directly prepares requests for staged PBIR authoring and publishing. It orchestrates the full lifecycle from audience definition to locked spec generation, ensuring all dependencies and design directions are approved before the build phase.

Why does Power BI report planning require a multi-round clarification process?▼

A multi-round clarification process is required for Power BI report planning to resolve ambiguous requests into a locked spec. This ensures audience definition, scope setting, and design direction are fully agreed upon before authoring begins.
