FAQPage Schema

How do I structure complex business logic in Rails without it becoming unmaintainable?▼

Service objects encapsulate multi-step business operations into single-responsibility classes with a dedicated call method and Result object pattern. This isolates complexity, making order processing, payment workflows, and cross-model coordination testable and maintainable.

What's the best way to handle transactions across multiple Rails models?▼

Wrap multi-model operations in service objects with transactional boundaries. This ensures atomic execution across models during coordinated operations like order creation, inventory updates, and notifications, preventing partial failures.

How do I apply TDD to Rails business logic?▼

Service objects with a clear call interface and Result object return value make business logic testable in isolation. Write tests for success and failure paths without coupling to controllers or models, enabling true test-driven development.

When should I use service objects versus Rails callbacks or model methods?▼

Service objects are best for operations spanning multiple models, requiring transaction safety, or orchestrating complex workflows. They prevent callback chains and fat models, keeping each service focused on a single business responsibility.

Can service objects handle payment processing and order workflows together?▼

Yes. Service objects coordinate multi-step workflows like order processing, payment authorization, inventory updates, and notifications in sequence. The Result object conveys success or failure with structured error handling across all steps.
