What problem does it solve?

This Skill teaches composing Relay fragments to declare data needs alongside components for maintainable data flow.

Core Features & Use Cases

Fragment definition & composition: Build reusable fragments across components.
Data masking & colocation: Control what data is exposed per component.
End-to-end patterns: Efficient data fetching with Relay.

Quick Start

Define a fragment in a component and use useFragment to read the data.

FAQPage Schema

How do I compose Relay fragments to manage component data dependencies?▼

Relay fragment composition lets you declare data needs alongside React components for predictable data flow. Define fragments using graphql``, colocate them with components, and use useFragment to access masked data. This approach scales component-level queries across TypeScript projects with data masking and optimized fetching.

What is data masking in Relay and why does it matter?▼

Data masking in Relay controls what data each component can access, exposing only fields declared in its fragment. This enforces boundaries between components, prevents accidental coupling, and makes data dependencies explicit and maintainable as your React UI grows.

Can I use Relay fragments with TypeScript and what setup is required?▼

Yes, Relay works with TypeScript. Install react-relay, relay-runtime, relay-compiler, babel-plugin-relay, and graphql. Configure relay.config.js with language: 'typescript' and an artifactDirectory. The compiler generates type-safe fragment artifacts automatically.

How do fragment arguments work in Relay composition?▼

Fragment arguments let you parameterize fragments so they accept variables at definition time. This enables reusable, flexible fragments that adapt to different component contexts without duplicating queries. Arguments flow through composition boundaries alongside data masking.

What's the best way to optimize data fetching across component boundaries in React?▼

Colocate Relay fragments with components to declare exact data needs at each level, then compose fragments up the component tree. This colocation pattern eliminates over-fetching, reduces query complexity, and keeps data logic tightly bound to rendering logic in scalable React UIs.

Do I need to restructure my GraphQL schema to use Relay fragment composition?▼

No schema restructuring is required. Relay fragment composition works with any GraphQL schema. Focus on defining fragments that match your component structure and declaring connections for paginated data. The Relay compiler handles artifact generation and type checking.
