What problem does it solve?

This Skill helps manage distributed transactions and long-running business processes, especially in microservices architecture, by implementing saga patterns.

Core Features & Use Cases

Implement Saga Patterns: Coordinates transactions across microservices, designs compensating actions for failed workflows, and builds event-driven coordinators.
Use Cases: Ideal for handling cross-service transactions without distributed locks, managing long-running workflows, and replacing two-phase commit.
Detailed Sections: Offers in-depth information on core concepts, advanced patterns, and best practices.

Quick Start

Use the saga-orchestration skill to generate a saga definition for a transaction that involves inventory, payment, and shipping services.

Frequently Asked Questions about saga-orchestration

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I manage distributed transactions across microservices without two-phase commit?▼

Saga orchestration manages distributed transactions by coordinating service boundaries and designing compensating actions. It handles cross-service operations through event-driven coordinators, replacing two-phase commit and avoiding distributed locks.

What is a compensating transaction in a saga pattern?▼

A compensating transaction in a saga pattern is a rollback mechanism for failed workflows. Saga orchestration designs these actions to undo preceding cross-service operations, ensuring data consistency when a distributed transaction step fails.

How do I implement a saga definition for inventory, payment, and shipping services?▼

To implement a saga definition for inventory, payment, and shipping services, use saga orchestration to coordinate the transaction requirements. It generates event-driven coordinators that manage the workflow and compensation logic across these service boundaries.

When should I use saga patterns for long-running workflows?▼

Use saga patterns for long-running workflows when you need to manage distributed transactions across microservices without distributed locks. Saga orchestration is ideal for replacing two-phase commit and handling cross-service operations asynchronously.

Do I need asynchronous messaging experience to implement saga patterns?▼

Yes, implementing saga patterns requires knowledge of distributed systems and asynchronous messaging. Saga orchestration builds event-driven coordinators and compensation logic, relying on these foundations to manage complex cross-service workflows effectively.

What are the limitations of using saga orchestration for microservices?▼

Saga orchestration lacks global data consistency guarantees and requires manual design of compensating transactions for every failed workflow step. It also demands a solid understanding of distributed systems and asynchronous messaging to handle complex state coordination.
