What problem does it solve?

This skill helps you analyze how scientific knowledge evolves over time by quantifying disruption vs. consolidation, identifying sleeping-beauty breakthroughs, measuring novelty through knowledge recombination, and modeling collaboration and citation dynamics.

Core Features & Use Cases

  • Disruption index (CD index): Compute Funk & Owen-Smith disruption/consolidation scores from citation and reference relationships to detect whether work is moving the field forward or building on prior foundations.
  • Team size effects: Assess how team size correlates with citations, disruption, and novelty rates to study patterns of scientific production.
  • Sleeping beauty detection: Identify papers with long dormancy followed by strong later recognition using awakening intensity and dormancy length.
  • Knowledge recombination: Estimate novelty/conventionality by comparing observed co-citation patterns to Monte Carlo null models based on permuted reference/journal structures.
  • Knowledge flow mapping: Build and analyze citation-based networks to trace cross-disciplinary information flow and cumulative advantage dynamics.

Quick Start

Use the science-of-science skill to compute disruption (CD index), sleeping beauty scores, and knowledge recombination novelty from your citation and reference dataset.
