SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

💡 This Skill includes references (resource) components.

What problem does it solve? Planning or restructuring a website's information architecture is difficult to do systematically — pages get buried, URLs become inconsistent, and orphan pages hurt both users and SEO. This Skill provides a structured methodology for designing page hierarchies, navigation, URL patterns, and internal linking. ## Core Features & Use Cases - Page Hierarchy Design: Build ASCII tree sitemaps and Mermaid visual sitemaps following the 3-click rule, with templates for SaaS, e-commerce, blog, documentation, and small business sites. - URL & Navigation Specification: Define human-readable URL patterns, header/footer/sidebar navigation rules, and breadcrumb structures aligned to the URL hierarchy. - Internal Linking Strategy: Plan hub-and-spoke content models, cross-section links, and run orphan-page audits with a link checklist. - Use Case: A SaaS company restructuring its marketing site can get a full deliverable set — ASCII hierarchy, Mermaid sitemap, URL map table, navigation spec, and internal linking plan — in one session. ## Quick Start Plan a site architecture for my SaaS marketing website with features, pricing, blog, and docs sections, including a visual sitemap and URL map.

FAQPage Schema

How do I plan a website sitemap and page hierarchy?▼

Start by identifying your site type (SaaS, blog, e-commerce, docs), then build a hierarchy keeping important pages within 3 clicks of the homepage. Output the structure as an ASCII tree with URLs at each node, plus a Mermaid diagram for visual review.

What is the best URL structure for SEO?▼

Use short, lowercase, hyphenated URLs that mirror the site hierarchy, such as /features/analytics. Avoid dates in blog URLs, IDs, query parameters, and deep nesting beyond 3-4 levels, and always 301 redirect old URLs when restructuring.

How many items should a website header navigation have?▼

Keep header navigation to 4-7 items with the CTA button rightmost and the logo linking home. If a section has many sub-pages, use a dropdown or mega menu limited to 3-4 columns rather than adding more top-level items.

Does this skill generate XML sitemaps for search engines?▼

No, this skill covers visual sitemaps and information architecture planning only. XML sitemaps are a technical SEO concern handled by a separate seo-audit skill, and structured data is covered by a schema-markup skill.

What is a hub-and-spoke internal linking model?▼

A hub page covers a broad topic and links to detailed spoke articles, each of which links back to the hub and to related spokes. This concentrates internal link authority on the hub and prevents orphan pages in content-heavy sites.

When should I use Mermaid versus ASCII for a sitemap?▼

Use ASCII trees for quick drafts and text-only contexts with simple structures. Use Mermaid graph TD diagrams for presentations, complex relationships, or when annotating navigation zones and page status with color coding.
