SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Pets commonly encounter toxic substances and owners need rapid risk assessment to guide triage and treatment decisions. This Skill translates ingestion data into actionable toxicity risk levels for veterinary workflows.

Core Features & Use Cases

Dose-per-kilogram calculation from amount ingested and patient weight.
Risk stratification (no concern / monitor / treat / critical) with species-specific thresholds.
Time-since-ingestion assessment to inform decontamination decisions.
Common toxicant reference data for substances including chocolate, xylitol, grapes/raisins, lilies, ethylene glycol, THC, macadamia nuts.
Provides initial guidance and safety considerations to escalate to veterinary care.

Quick Start

Enter the animal's species, weight, ingested substance, amount, and time since ingestion to receive an initial toxicity risk assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions about toxicology-calculator

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I calculate toxicity risk for pet poisoning exposures?▼

Toxicity risk is calculated by translating the ingested substance amount and animal weight into a dose-per-kilogram measurement, then evaluating against species-specific thresholds to determine severity.

What substances are covered by veterinary toxicology dose calculations?▼

Veterinary toxicology dose calculations cover common toxicants including chocolate, xylitol, grapes/raisins, lilies, ethylene glycol, THC, and macadamia nuts, applying species-specific rules for each.

How does time since ingestion affect decontamination decisions for pet poisoning?▼

Time since ingestion affects decontamination decisions by determining whether the toxicant is still absorbable, guiding veterinary workflows on whether induced emesis or activated charcoal remains viable.

Can I use this toxicology risk assessment for both cats and dogs?▼

Toxicology risk assessment supports both cats and dogs by applying species-specific thresholds and rules, ensuring accurate dose-based risk stratification for varied patient weights and exposures.

What toxicity risk levels are used to stratify pet poisoning exposures?▼

Toxicity risk levels stratify pet poisoning exposures into four categories: no concern, monitor, treat, and critical, providing actionable guidance to inform veterinary triage decisions.

What information do I need to assess poisoning risk for a pet?▼

To assess poisoning risk for a pet, you need the animal's species, weight, the specific ingested substance, the estimated amount ingested, and the time elapsed since ingestion.
