SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

This skill solves the problem of unbrowsable back matter, reference lists, and registries that rely on alphabetical walls of text, which force users to know the exact name of an item to find it.

Core Features & Use Cases

Visual Indexing: Replaces alphabetical lists with a browsable quilt of thumbnails, allowing users to recognize items by sight rather than recall.
Contextual Ordering: Organizes entries by the user's path (page, space, time, or subject) rather than arbitrary alphabetical sorting.
Use Case: Use this to remodel a design-system component library or a research repository so that team members can find assets by their visual appearance or project context instead of searching for specific filenames.

Quick Start

Use the tufte visual index skill to audit our current component library and propose a new layout based on the visual appearance of each component.

Frequently Asked Questions about tufte-visual-index

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I make a design system component library browsable by visual appearance instead of filenames?▼

Make a design system component library browsable by remodeling alphabetical lists into a visual index of thumbnails, allowing users to locate assets by recognition and context rather than exact filename recall.

What is the best way to organize a research repository so users can navigate by document sequence?▼

Organize a research repository by applying contextual ordering, which sequences entries based on the user's natural path through the content, such as page, space, time, or subject.

How do I convert an asset registry from an alphabetical list into a visual quilt?▼

Convert an asset registry into a visual quilt by replacing alphabetical text walls with a browsable grid of thumbnail-based entries, enabling users to find items by sight.

When should I use visual indexing instead of alphabetical lookup for back matter?▼

Use visual indexing for back matter when users need to navigate reference apparatuses by visual context or document sequence, rather than knowing the exact name of an item beforehand.

Can I audit an existing component library to propose a new layout based on visual appearance?▼

Audit an existing component library by evaluating the current alphabetical structure and proposing a new thumbnail-based layout ordered by the visual appearance of each component.

Why does an alphabetical list make finding assets in a design system difficult?▼

An alphabetical list makes finding assets difficult because it forces users to know exact filenames, whereas a visual index allows them to recognize items by sight within their project context.
