SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Enables fast, deterministic unit tests for services that depend on external REST APIs by stubbing HTTP endpoints locally.

Core Features & Use Cases

Stub REST endpoints, responses, and error scenarios.
Verify requests (headers, query params, body) and simulate failures (timeouts, 5xx).
Run tests in isolation without real network calls.

Quick Start

WireMock should be configured in JUnit tests; stub endpoints, call the client, and assert responses and request details.

FAQPage Schema

How do I mock external REST API calls in Java unit tests?▼

Mock external REST APIs using WireMock, a library that stubs HTTP endpoints locally in your tests. Configure WireMock in JUnit 5, define stub responses, call your API client, and verify the requests—all without real network calls.

Can I verify request headers, query parameters, and body content when mocking APIs?▼

Yes. WireMock enables thorough request verification across headers, query parameters, and request bodies. After your code calls the mocked endpoint, assert that WireMock received the exact requests you expected.

How do I test error scenarios like timeouts and HTTP 5xx responses?▼

WireMock lets you simulate failure conditions—timeouts, server errors, and other HTTP failures—without hitting real APIs. Stub these scenarios in your tests to verify your client handles errors correctly.

Does WireMock work with Maven and Gradle projects?▼

Yes. WireMock integrates as a dependency in both Maven and Gradle builds. Add it to your project configuration, and it runs as part of your test suite with dynamic port allocation for CI-friendly execution.

What's the best way to isolate REST API client tests from external dependencies?▼

Unit test REST API clients in isolation by mocking external endpoints with WireMock. This approach eliminates network dependencies, speeds up tests, and makes them deterministic and safe to run anywhere.

Do I need to modify my API client code to work with WireMock mocks?▼

No. WireMock stubs HTTP endpoints at the network level, so your API client code runs unchanged. Point your client to WireMock's local endpoint during tests, and it behaves as if calling a real API.
