SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

## What problem does it solve? This Skill helps finance and operations teams quickly identify, quantify, and explain variances between actuals, budgets, forecasts, and priors so stakeholders understand drivers and required actions.

## Core Features & Use Cases

Variance decomposition: Price/volume, rate/mix, headcount/compensation, and spend-category breakdowns with formulas and examples.
Materiality & investigation triggers: Threshold frameworks and prioritization rules to focus limited analysis time on material items.
Narrative generation & waterfall methodology: Concise, quantified narrative templates and text-based waterfall reconciliation formats for reports and presentations.
Use case: Monthly finance close where teams must reconcile revenue and margin swings, generate board-ready explanations, and update forecasts.

### Quick Start Use this skill to decompose a $X variance into price, volume, mix, and timing drivers and generate a 2-4 sentence explanation with recommended actions.

Frequently Asked Questions about variance-analysis

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I decompose a financial variance into price, volume, and mix drivers?▼

Variance decomposition breaks down financial metric swings into price, volume, mix, and timing drivers using specific formulas. This quantifies each driver's impact so stakeholders understand exactly what caused the difference between actuals and budgets.

What is the best way to set materiality thresholds for variance investigation?▼

Materiality thresholds provide a framework of prioritization rules to focus analysis time on significant items. By setting specific variance limits, teams determine which financial swings require formal investigation and which can be automatically flagged as immaterial.

How do I generate board-ready variance narratives for monthly financial reporting?▼

Variance narrative generation uses concise templates to produce 2-4 sentence quantified explanations of financial swings. This translates raw variance data into clear, actionable summaries suitable for board reports and stakeholder presentations.

Can I use waterfall reconciliation formats for quarterly budget versus forecast comparisons?▼

Waterfall reconciliation formats support monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting scenarios for budget versus forecast comparisons. They visually map how individual price, volume, and spend-category drivers accumulate to explain the total financial variance.

Does variance analysis work for both revenue and operating expense metrics?▼

Variance analysis applies to revenue, COGS, payroll, and operating expenses. It handles headcount and compensation breakdowns alongside spend-category variances, allowing teams to reconcile both top-line and operational metric swings consistently.

When should I prioritize variance investigations during the monthly finance close?▼

Prioritize investigations by applying materiality thresholds to identify swings that exceed defined limits. Focus on variances that materially impact revenue or margin reconciliation, ensuring limited analysis time targets the most significant financial drivers.
