SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Variance commentary helps finance teams automatically explain month-end and year-over-year variances in P&L and balance-sheet lines, reducing manual writing and accelerating close cycles.

Core Features & Use Cases

Automatic variance flagging: flags lines where current versus prior or budget variance crosses materiality thresholds or sits on the always-comment list.
Driver narrative generation: produces one-sentence drivers for each line explaining the underlying activity behind movements.
End-to-end period summaries: outputs a structured commentary table plus a concise 3-5 sentence narrative.

Quick Start

Provide the current-period actuals, prior-period actuals, and budget for the same scope to generate the variance commentary and driver explanations.

Frequently Asked Questions about variance-commentary

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I automate month-end variance commentary for P&L statements?▼

Variance commentary flags material movements in P&L and balance sheet lines by comparing current, prior, and budget data, then generates one-sentence driver narratives explaining the underlying activity. It requires current actuals, prior actuals, and budget data for the same scope.

What is driver analysis in financial variance reporting?▼

Driver analysis in financial variance reporting identifies the specific underlying activities causing financial movements. It generates one-sentence explanations for each flagged line, and if the driver is unclear, it returns a flag for the controller to review.

How do I set materiality thresholds for flagging financial variances?▼

Set materiality thresholds to define which current versus prior or budget variances get flagged for commentary. Lines crossing these thresholds or sitting on an always-comment list are automatically flagged for driver narrative generation.

Does variance commentary work with balance sheet lines or only P&L?▼

Variance commentary works with both P&L and balance sheet lines for management reporting and month-end close workflows. It compares current, prior, and budget data to identify drivers behind movements across financial statements.

What happens if the underlying driver behind a variance is unclear?▼

If the underlying driver behind a variance is unclear, the system returns a designated flag for the controller to review. This ensures unexplained movements are escalated rather than generating inaccurate commentary.

What output format does variance commentary generate for management reporting?▼

Variance commentary generates a structured commentary table alongside a concise 3-5 sentence narrative summary. This output explains flagged movements and driver explanations for management reporting and month-end close.
