SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Producing month-end variance commentary is time-consuming and easy to get wrong, especially when you must explain why each P&L and balance-sheet line moved—not just by how much—using the actual underlying activity.

Core Features & Use Cases

Threshold-based flagging: Automatically selects which revenue, headcount cost, cash, and other lines require commentary based on materiality thresholds and an always-comment list.
Driver-focused explanation: Converts the underlying activity (e.g., journal/source breakdowns, vendor mix, headcount deltas, or volume × rate) into a one-sentence driver that explains the movement.
Close-ready output: Produces a commentary table showing current, prior, and budget values with both dollar/% deltas plus a short narrative of the biggest movers for management reporting.

Quick Start

Use the variance-commentary skill to create a close-ready commentary table for your selected scope using current actuals, prior actuals, and budget, ensuring each flagged line includes a driver sourced from underlying activity.

FAQPage Schema

How do I generate variance commentary for month-end close packages?▼

Generate variance commentary by comparing current actuals against prior actuals and budget to produce a close-ready table. The output flags material line items based on thresholds and articulates the underlying driver for each P&L and balance sheet movement.

What is the best way to explain budget vs actual fluctuations in management reporting?▼

Explaining budget vs actual fluctuations requires converting underlying activity into a one-sentence driver for each flagged line. The commentary table displays dollar and percentage deltas alongside a sourced narrative explaining why revenue, headcount cost, or cash moved.

How does materiality threshold flagging work for P&L variance analysis?▼

Materiality threshold flagging automatically selects which P&L and balance sheet lines require commentary by evaluating the magnitude of change against configured limits and an always-comment list. This ensures only significant movements are selected for driver-focused explanation.

Can I automate flux commentary for balance sheet lines without inventing explanations?▼

Automating flux commentary for balance sheet lines is possible by sourcing drivers from underlying activity like journal breakdowns or vendor mix. The process explicitly flags when a movement cannot be clarified without inventing explanations to maintain reporting integrity.

Does variance commentary support headcount cost and revenue driver explanations?▼

Variance commentary supports headcount cost and revenue driver explanations by analyzing volume and rate deltas. It transforms underlying activity data into a short narrative detailing the biggest movers for management reporting close packages.

What are the limitations of automated driver explanation for month-end close?▼

Automated driver explanation is limited by the availability of underlying activity data to source accurate reasons for line movements. It cannot clarify drivers without inventing explanations when journal details or vendor mix information are missing, requiring manual review.
