SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Version control challenges in design work often lead to lost history, inconsistent libraries, and unclear change provenance; this Skill defines clear strategies to standardize how design files, libraries, tokens, and assets are versioned.

Core Features & Use Cases

Establish versioning rules for design files (Figma, Sketch, etc.), libraries, and tokens.
Define branching, changelog, and migration practices to keep teams aligned and auditable.
Provide workflows for archiving old versions and recovering previous states across projects.

Quick Start

Define a version-control plan for your design system and begin applying it to your next release.

Frequently Asked Questions about version-control-strategy

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema

How do I manage version control for design files and tokens?▼

To manage version control for design files and tokens, you need to establish clear rules for branching, changelogs, and migration. This standardizes how design assets are versioned, ensuring backward compatibility and an auditable history across multiple projects.

What is the best way to handle branching in Figma libraries?▼

The best way to handle branching in Figma libraries is to enforce a defined branching strategy combined with consistent changelog practices. This approach keeps design teams aligned, prevents lost history, and maintains consistent component libraries across projects.

How do I create a changelog for a design system release?▼

Creating a changelog for a design system release involves documenting versioning rules and migration practices for your components and tokens. This ensures change provenance is clear, allowing teams to track updates and recover previous states when necessary.

Can I recover previous versions of design assets across multiple projects?▼

Yes, you can recover previous versions of design assets by applying workflows for archiving old versions. Defining a structured version-control plan for your design system enables reliable recovery of previous states and prevents lost file history across projects.

Why does my design team struggle with inconsistent libraries and lost history?▼

Design teams struggle with inconsistent libraries and lost history due to undefined version control strategies. Without established versioning rules, branching practices, and migration guides, tracking change provenance for design files, components, and tokens becomes unreliable.

When do I need a versioning strategy for design assets?▼

You need a versioning strategy for design assets when your team manages Figma files, components, tokens, and documentation across multiple projects. Implementing branching, changelogs, and versioning rules ensures backward compatibility and an auditable design history.
