SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve? Research requests often arrive vague ("we should talk to users") and turn into studies with no decision behind them, wrong sample sizes, or timelines that ignore recruiting reality. This Skill converts any research request into a complete, runnable one-page plan before any participant is contacted. ## Core Features & Use Cases - NN/g 5-Section Plan: Produces Purpose & Goals, Participants, Method & Procedure, Logistics, and Relevant Documents in a single page another researcher could execute. - Smart Intake Gate: Fills what it can from context and asks only the unanswered questions — decision, current belief, user access, time/budget, prior work, scope. - Saturation-Based Sample Sizing: Calibrates N using NN/g's three factors (group diversity, scope, researcher skill) with a written saturation clause and ~20% over-recruiting. - Mandatory Feasibility Gate: Blocks plans that lack buffer, recruiting lead time, a pilot, named moderator/notetaker, or a decision deadline. - Use Case: A stakeholder says "plan interviews to decide whether the booking flow ships." The Skill drafts a plan with 3–5 tagged research questions, N=9 with rationale, a session outline, recruiting timeline, and a feasibility check against the decision deadline. ## Quick Start Write a research plan for discovery interviews about how our salon clients decide and book appointments, with a launch decision due in three weeks.

FAQPage Schema
How do I write a UX research plan?

Anchor the plan to a decision, write 3–5 method-agnostic research questions, define behavioral participant criteria with a saturation-based sample size, document a replicable procedure, and add logistics plus linked documents. The Skill follows NN/g's five-section structure and ends with a feasibility gate.

How many participants do I need for user interviews?

There is no universal N. For exploratory interviews with one segment, start at 8–10; with two or more segments, plan 6–8 per segment. Calibrate using group diversity, research scope, and moderator skill, and stop when two consecutive sessions surface no new themes.

What is the difference between research questions and interview questions?

Research questions are analytical, team-facing statements of what the team needs to learn and live in the plan's Purpose & Goals section. Interview questions are conversational prompts asked to participants and belong in the linked interview guide, never in the plan itself.

When should I not use a research plan template?

Do not use it to frame the problem (use a problem statement first), choose the research method, write participant-facing interview questions, or build the recruiting screener. Those belong to separate skills; the plan only records and links their outputs.

Why does a research plan need a feasibility gate?

A plan that cannot finish before its decision deadline is a liability. The gate checks realistic effort including synthesis, recruiting lead time, at least 20% schedule buffer, approved incentives, a scheduled pilot, and named moderator and notetaker for every session.
