SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

💡 This Skill requires youtube-transcript-api, and includes scripts (resource) and references (resource) components.

What problem does it solve? Manually watching long YouTube videos to capture key points is time-consuming, and repurposing video content into written formats requires tedious transcription work. This Skill fetches video transcripts automatically and transforms them into structured written content. ## Core Features & Use Cases - Transcript Extraction: Fetch transcripts from any YouTube URL format (watch links, youtu.be, shorts, embeds, live) with language fallback support. - Multiple Output Formats: Convert transcripts into timestamped chapters, summaries, chapter summaries, Twitter/X threads, blog posts, or notable quotes. - Long Video Handling: Automatically chunks transcripts exceeding 50K characters with overlapping segments for accurate summarization. - Use Case: A content creator shares a 45-minute conference talk link and asks for a Twitter thread. The Skill fetches the transcript with timestamps, identifies key insights, and outputs a numbered thread with each post under 280 characters. ## Quick Start Summarize this YouTube video into timestamped chapters: https://youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema
How do I get a transcript from a YouTube video in Python?▼

Use the youtube-transcript-api package to fetch transcripts programmatically. Pass a video URL or 11-character video ID to the fetch_transcript.py script, which returns JSON with segments, full text, and optional timestamps.

How to summarize a YouTube video without watching it?▼

Fetch the video transcript using youtube-transcript-api, then transform the text into a summary, chapter list, or blog post. Long transcripts over 50K characters are split into overlapping chunks and summarized before merging.

What YouTube URL formats are supported for transcript extraction?▼

The script accepts standard watch URLs, youtu.be short links, shorts, embeds, live links, and raw 11-character video IDs. It extracts the video ID using regex patterns before fetching the transcript.

Why does YouTube transcript extraction fail for some videos?▼

Extraction fails when transcripts are disabled by the video owner, the video is private or unavailable, or no transcript matches the requested language. Retry without the --language flag to fetch any available transcript.

Can I fetch YouTube transcripts in languages other than English?▼

Yes, pass comma-separated language codes with the --language flag, such as --language tr,en, to specify a fallback chain. If no matching language exists, omit the flag to retrieve any available transcript and note the actual language.
