SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

Godot shader developers often struggle to create high-quality visual effects that are both correct and performant across CanvasItem and Spatial shaders, especially when balancing VisualShader graphs with code shaders.

Core Features & Use Cases

2D CanvasItem shaders for sprite outlines, UI polish, and 2D post-processing
3D Spatial shaders for surface materials, world effects, and volumetrics
Build VisualShader graphs for artist-accessible material variation
Implement CompositorEffect-based full-screen post-processing passes and profile performance

Quick Start

Provide a ready-to-run Godot 4 shader setup including a sample 2D outline shader, a basic 3D shader, and a minimal fullscreen post-processing pass.

FAQPage Schema

How do I optimize Godot 4 shaders for performance across 2D and 3D contexts?▼

To optimize Godot 4 shaders, use uniform hints and safe post-processing workflows to balance visual quality with rendering overhead. This ensures CanvasItem and Spatial shaders run efficiently without unnecessary computational cost.

When should I use VisualShader graphs instead of code shaders in Godot?▼

Use VisualShader graphs for artist-accessible material variations, and code shaders for heavy logic. This allows designers to tweak visual parameters easily while developers handle complex shader computations.

How do I create a 2D sprite outline shader in Godot 4?▼

Create a 2D sprite outline shader by implementing a CanvasItem shader that samples surrounding pixels to detect edges. This provides a polished outline effect for sprites and UI elements.

Can I implement fullscreen post-processing passes with CompositorEffect in Godot 4?▼

Yes, you can implement CompositorEffect-based full-screen post-processing passes in Godot 4. This enables safe screen-wide visual effects while allowing you to profile and maintain shader performance.

What is the correct way to declare shader types in Godot 4?▼

Declaring shader types in Godot 4 requires mandatory shader_type declarations at the beginning of your code. This defines whether the shader operates as a CanvasItem or Spatial material, ensuring renderer compatibility.
