FAQPage Schema

How do I create a story map to align my team on product scope?▼

A story map visualizes user journeys, stages, activities, and tasks in a structured table format. It aligns cross-functional teams—product, engineering, marketing—on scope by showing how value delivers incrementally across release slices, solving misalignment in product planning from discovery through delivery.

What should I include in a user story map?▼

A story map includes columns for stages, activities, tasks, and candidate releases, plus a narrative summary highlighting assumptions, dependencies, and instrumentation needs per slice. This structure produces an export-ready backlog table and documents alignment notes across your release plan.

Can I use a story map for release planning and prioritization?▼

Yes. Story maps organize tasks into release slices, showing which features deliver value in each increment. This approach supports release planning by visualizing dependencies, sequencing work across stages, and ensuring stakeholders understand how goals map to candidate releases.

How does a story map differ from a traditional product backlog?▼

A story map adds spatial structure—stages, activities, and tasks arranged by user workflow—to help teams see the whole user journey at once. Unlike a flat backlog list, it reveals dependencies, priorities within slices, and how incremental releases align to user goals and business outcomes.

What personas and goals work best for story mapping?▼

Story mapping works for any persona with a defined primary goal—for example, a new user onboarding or an administrator managing access. Start with the core user workflow, outline key activities and tasks that ladder up to that goal, then map which tasks belong in each release slice.
