SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve?

It helps you classify and allocate qualified research and development (R&D) spend for Section 174 and potential federal R&D credit support, producing audit-ready documentation for your tax preparer.

Core Features & Use Cases

IRS-category bucketing: Organizes qualified spend into the four IRS-style categories—qualified wages, supplies, cloud/computer leasing, and contract research at 65%.
Project-level allocation: Spreads qualified amounts across your projects, or uses an “Unallocated R&D” bucket when you do not provide a project list.
Exclusions with audit notes: Flags common non-qualifying items (like routine analytics, post-release fixes, and funded research) with citations so your tax preparer can review the judgments.

Quick Start

Tag your R&D spend for 2025 by linking your payroll source (if you have employees) and then asking for an R&D credit support breakdown that your tax preparer can use.

FAQPage Schema

How do I classify R&D spend for Section 174 and Form 6765 support?▼

Classify R&D spend for Section 174 by bucketizing qualified wages, supplies, cloud leasing, and contract research, then allocating amounts across projects to generate a Form 6765 compliance report. This process organizes your ledger and payroll data into audit-ready documentation.

What is the best way to allocate qualified research expenses across multiple projects?▼

Allocate qualified research expenses across multiple projects by linking your payroll source and ledger transactions, allowing the system to spread the categorized amounts. If no project list is provided, amounts default to an Unallocated R&D bucket for your tax preparer.

Do I need linked payroll records to calculate R&D tax credits?▼

Linked payroll records are required to calculate R&D tax credits when you have employees, as qualified wages are a primary IRS category. The system reads these payroll sources alongside ledger transactions to determine eligibility and accurately bucketize spend.

Does R&D expense classification automatically exclude non-qualifying costs like routine analytics?▼

R&D expense classification excludes non-qualifying costs like routine analytics, post-release fixes, and funded research by flagging them with audit notes. These exclusions provide citations so your tax preparer can review the judgments made during the compliance documentation process.

Can I use ledger transactions alone without an accounting integration for R&D credit documentation?▼

You can use ledger transactions alone for R&D credit documentation, as accounting integration is optional while payroll linkage is required. The system reads available ledger context files to determine tax year eligibility and writes a year-specific compliance report.

What format does the R&D credit support breakdown output generate for tax preparers?▼

The R&D credit support breakdown outputs a year-specific compliance report detailing IRS-category bucketing and project-level allocations, and appends an indexed entry to outputs.json. This format provides your tax preparer with the audit-ready documentation needed for Form 6765.
